The Underdog
By Sebastian Harris
“Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are those who mourn,
for they will be comforted.
Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the earth.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be filled.
Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart,
for they will see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called children of God.
Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”
Matthew 5:3-10
Being an underdog sucks. Being humble is hard. It is the nature of humans to live life with the “survival of the fittest” mindset. We all want to be the wealthiest, best looking, most famous out there. I know this is the way I often live my life. As a high school student, I see this every day in the people around me. It’s like one big popularity contest.
It has taken me a while to realize, though, that life begins to seem pointless after continuously chasing the spotlight. Once you get it, before you know it, it's gone again and you’re stuck craving it even more. It is when one realizes that life becomes so much sweeter when one focuses on serving others rather than oneself.
Jesus is a perfect example of living this way. He started out life in the humblest of places—a literal manger in the dirt, surrounded by animals—and He even continued to live a humble life. Even though He lived a modest life, He was beloved and admired among many. Jesus became a king by serving others. This sounds contradictory, but it is as He says:
“Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.” Matthew 5:5
No one will ever achieve the level of humility that Jesus did, but living even a little bit more like him makes life seem just that much more beautiful.
